Show Spoiler

a5c7b9f00b In ages past, a malevolent race called the Arakacians discovered a place where space-time leaked an immortality water. The Arakacians conquered the known universe for centuries, and were finally vanquished after the fountain chamber was sealed by freedom fighters. Upon discovery of a shard of the Loc-Nar (the evil orb from the original movie), a miner named Tyler becomes possessed by an insatiable hunger for power and a thirst for immortality. On his way to a planet which has the immortality fountain, Tyler makes a brief stop on F.A.K.K.² (Federation-Assigned Ketogenic Killzone) because its inhabitants carry some immortality water in their bodies. Tyler invades the space colony, wipes out most of the inhabitants, and kidnaps a beautiful woman named Kerrie. Enraged by Tyler's careless rampage, Kerrie's beautiful sister Julie vows to avenge her family and wipe out Tyler before he reaches the fountain.
After surviving an invasion on her peaceful homeworld, a beautiful avenger must stop a powerful psychopath from gaining immortality and rescue her kidnapped sister.
…But I do think this film is superior to the first in many regards, the most significant being storyline. Beyond it having quirky, cult appeal, the first Heavy Metal didn't pull me in- because it isn't really a movie - It's more a compilation expo of amateur animation, like a really gory Liquid TV of old. Heavy Metal 2000 is a solid story uniformly executed, and it's even (gasp) coherent. (Unlike the first film, which nobody fully understands and if they say they do, they're kidding themselves. And I am not in the camp of those who believe that counterculture animation has to be esoteric to be enjoyable.) Also the manual animation is better than the original's, while still being sloppy and humble enough to maintain the amateur, "We haven't sold out- We're still a bunch of geeky, sex-obsessed artists huddling in our basements drawing hot chicks in skimpy outfits" look, and the coloring (which I assume is digital) is much richer and more lifelike than the first film ever achieved. (I am also not in the camp of those who believe that digital coloring marks the end of craftsmanship in animated films.) There is a villain in this movie, too, a pretty good one who even made me laugh a couple times, and a few other nicely rendered characters, including a little guy made of rocks who ends up saving the day. Now, the BAD: The "music" is dumb. It's just background noise that sounds all the same, but the first Heavy Metal was like that, too. The leading lady, Julie, is pretty awful in the voice-over department. I mean, not quite PORNO MOVIE bad, but still a bother to listen to. Also there is some gratuity in this film that was not an issue in the first one, probably because promiscuity and technology have sharply inclined at about the same rate since the first Heavy Metal. The result is T&A shots that do all but scream, "Look at the boobs! LOOK at them! We're breaking ground! Doing what no other animated film can do!" and abuse of CGI which does all but scream, "Look at it! It's terrible! But we're doing it because we CAN!" Honestly, though, I rented Osmosis Jones and Heavy Metal 2000 tonight… and Heavy Metal held my interest just as well, if not moreso. Sure, maybe it's not as "daring" and "artistic" as the first one, but I will take clarity and gradual storytelling over jumbled, interpretive art any day. When this movie started I was already telling myself what a mistake it was, but as it went on I really did want to see how it would end. This is not a bad movie, but it is different in technique from the first one.. So, if you really liked the original Heavy Metal, you might not like this one, and vice versa. It held my interest, and it deserves kudos for that. (Oh, and be sure to catch the nod to Punisher, as Tyler dons a familiar white-skulled ensemble for the final scenes.)
The movie had ended. For a few minutes Henry stared at the blank screen before he became aware of a buzzing noise. The garage-turned-movie- theater would have been dead silent but for that sound. He looked at the overhead beamer, but it did not make the sound. He turned his head from one side to the other to locate the source until he saw Kristl at the other end of their couch. She was hanging a bit to the side with her eyes closed. Her relaxed expression and slightly open mouth made her look peaceful.

'Look at her.. She has fallen asleep.' Henry thought.

Kristl was dressed in a dark grey sweater, blue faded jeans and combat boots. Henry tried to imagine her being dressed up like this Julie character from the movie; in ripped clothes with some metal plates, adorned with stakes as armor waving a wicked shaped sword. He imagined her having a wasp like waist and large dangling boobs, with big nipples and wide hips. He failed to get that picture right.

Gettingthe picture right was also something he failed to do with this movie too. It started with this supposed-to-be sexy woman living in insignificant colony on an off-beat planet who somehow got to be an expert in guns, lasers, hand weapons, spaceships and whatnot. He liked sexy women like Selene from Underworld, but her fighting skills seem to fit with her: she was a vampire death dealer after all.. How the heck Julie got them went unexplained. But it would not have mattered if it had been tongue-in-cheek like or over the top or somehow funny. But the movie tried to be deadly serious, where cheekiness could have saved it.

And then this bad guy. An unknown miner finds a key that gives access to the waters of eternal youth or something and turns him into an evil dude with fighting skills that would put Rambo to shame. It even gives him the dual guns he needs to take over the miner ship. And it even gives him the knowledge to find traces of water of eternal live in space and the route to the planet holding the waters. And it also gives him an army of ruthless obedient fighters. It even.. the list goes on and on.

If the animation had been stylish. If the music had been tolerable and well placed.. If the characters had somehow be believable or endearing. If the plot had been better. If the adult content had not been so rubbed into your face. If.. If.. If.

It was perhaps lucky that Kristl had fallen asleep. Her sleep was perhaps the best comment to this movie she could give.

Yet there was something strange. The snoring sound.. He never knew Kristl to snore, nor had he ever heard Kristl snore.

He turned to look at Kristl.

The sound did not come from her side of the couch.

He looked in to the screen of the computer that controlled the overhead beamer.

He saw himself being reflected.

He was sleeping.

The snoring came from him.
